A total of 311 lower court judges were appointed during the present government's tenure and another 100 would be recruited soon to overcome the shortage of judges in the country, said Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday. The government took necessary initiatives to enhance the logistic support for the judiciary, he added. He was addressing as chief guest a function on the inauguration of a 10- storied Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court building, prison-cum-police barrack's extension building and District Judge Court's digital board in the capital. There happens to be a shortage of land in the country due to the loss of one percent of agricultural land every year because of different reasons, including construction of structures, he said This has prompted the government to take the initiative to construct 12-storied chief judicial magistrate's court buildings in every district, he said. The minister also urged lawyers to extend their sincere cooperation in properly implementing the alternative dispute resolution (ADR) system for cases which were fit for settlement through compromise. He said the government would amend both Code of Civil Procedure (CPC) and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to incorporate the mandatory rule over following ADR in disposing of cases. The number of people who were in jail while their trials were being held in the country would come down if the cases against them were disposed of quickly, he added. State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam and ruling Awami League lawmakers Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Sanjida Khanam also spoke at the function, says a law ministry press release.
