BNP activists vandalised some 15 vehicles by blocking different points of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Sitakunda upazila after a Chittagong court sent one of the party leaders to jail on rejecting an ad interim bail petition yesterday. Witnesses said, within three hours of the court order, the demonstrations first appeared at Fakirhat area and in front of the Water Development Board office, situated beside the highway, at around 2:45pm. When police lobbed tear shells and charged baton to disperse the agitators, the violence spread to Barabkunda, Bangla Bazar, Kumira and Bhatiari, creating a huge gridlock on these areas adjoining the highway, they said. Police eventually quelled the demonstrations at around 4:30pm. The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Monsur rejected the petition after the leader, BNP Chittagong North district unit's General Secretary Aslam Chowdhury, appeared before it in a case filed for torching vehicles, said court sources. On May 13, the BNP-led 18-party alliance activists torched and vandalised vehicles during a clash between law-enforcers in Kazir Dewry area of Chittagong city. Later, six cases, including the aforementioned, were filed against over 2,000 men of the alliance in this connection.
