3,000 houses damaged, over 50 injured

Storm lashed four upazilas of Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts early yesterday and on Tuesday night, damaging over 3,000 thatched and tin-roofed houses and injuring at least 28 people. Our Kurigram correspondent reported that at least 600 houses were damaged as storm swept 20 villages in four unions of Rajarhat upazila early yesterday. Locals said the storm hit the village of four unions at around 12:00am and lasted for an hour. Boro paddy on about 200 hectares of land at Ratirum, Pathak, Arjunechchha, Shakoa, Taluk Nakkati and Chak Nakkati villages under Chakirpashar union, Joydebh Malshabari, Makor and Fakirerhat villages under Omar Majid union, Shom Narian village under Najimkhan union and Shukhdebh and Aramoula villages under Bidyananda union were damaged. Chairman of Chakirpashar union zahid 1 qbal Suhrawardy claimed that about 300 houses, 20 shops and boro paddy on150 acres of land were damaged by the storm in his union. Upazila Chairman Abu Nur Md Akhtaruzzaman and Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Md Sana Ullah visited the storm hit villages. In Lalmonirhat, At least 50 people were injured and over 2,500 houses damaged during the storm that lashed lashed 30 villages of sadar, Aditmari and Kaliganj upazilas on Tuesday night, reports our correspondent. The worst affected villages are Mondolerhat, Gokunda, Panchogram, Sindurmoti, Mohendronagar, Ambari, Harati, Guriadah of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila; Saptibari, Vadai, Namuri, Polashi, Komlabari, Haziganj villages of Aditmari upazila; and Kakina, Chaklarhat, Chaparhat, Jamirbari, Votmari and Mohipur villages of Kaligonj upazila. Boro paddy on about 50 bighas of land were damaged while and a good number of trees and electric poles uprooted. The injured people were admitted to the upazila health complexes.
