Nurse self-immolates over husband's 'illicit' affair

Nurse Dilruba Khatun, who set herself afire on Tuesday in protest at her husband's alleged illicit affair, finally succumbed to her burn injuries early Friday. Dilruba, 28, worked as senior nurse at LAMB Hospital in Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur while her husband Sarwar Hossain, hailing from Razabasor village under Parbatipur upazila, is a ward boy at the same hospital. On Tuesday night the couple locked in a quarrel over an illicit affair between Sarwar and another nurse of LAMB hospital, family members quoted witnesses as saying. At one stage, Sarwar went out of the residence. Later Dilruba set herself afire after pouring kerosene on her body at around 11:30pm the same night. Hearing her scream, locals took her to LAMB Hospital in Parbatipur upazila in a critical condition. After fighting for life for three days, she died at the hospital at around 3:30am on Friday. Doctors said over 50 per cent of her body had been burnt. Locals said that the couple often locked in quarrels over Sarwar's extramarital affair for the last several months. Sarwar, who spent almost all the time with his under treatment wife at the hospital for three days, declined to make any comment over the incident. Dilruba's parents Md Mosir Uddin and Aysa Begum held Sarwar responsible for the tragic death of their daughter. When contacted, Shawkat Ali, officer in charge of Parbatipur Model Police Station, said, "I visited the spot and the hospital after the hospital authority informed me of the incident. Nobody is yet to file any case in this connection."
