Our correspondent, Noakhali
Angry people blocked Dhaka-Laxmipur highway at Banglabazar under Begumganj upazila of the district yesterday demanding uninterrupted power supply in the upazila. Villagers, traders and students joined the agitation and put up barricades on the road, disrupting traffic for two hours from 11:00am. On information, police rushed to the spot but could not disperse the agitating people from the spot and remove barricades from the highway. Begumganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khandaker Nurul Hoque reached the spot at around 1:00pm and assured the protesters of taking necessary steps to mitigate their sufferings. Following assurance of the UNO, the agitators withdrew the programme and removed barricades from the road. Locals alleged that they get electricity only for three hours a day with low voltage. On Monday, Noakhali townspeople confined two engineers of the Power Development Board (PDB) at their office rooms at maijdee Court protesting frequent load shedding in the area. Several hundred people led by former lawmaker Fazle Elahi and Muktijoddha Commander Fazlul Haque Badal came to the local PDB office in a procession and confined Superintendent Engineer Anup Kumar Das Gupta and Executive Engineers Md Fakrul Alam in their rooms for an hour from 11:00am.
