Storm kills two, damages 300 houses in Netrakona

A nor'wester accompanied with hails lashed three villages in Kendua upazila of the district on Monday night, killing two people and damaging at least 300 thatched houses. The dead were identified as Asma Begum, 32, and her daughter Marufa Begum, 12, of Patherikona village. The storm hit Patherikona, Nilamborkhila and Chitta-Nawapara villages at around 11:30pm and lasted for an hour. At least 10 people were injured. Upazila administration sources said storm accompanied with hails damaged boro paddy on over 1,000 hectares of land in the three villages. Several hundred trees and electric poles were uprooted, plunging storm-hit areas into darkness. Electricity supply could not be restored as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. Three of the injured--Amena Begum, Salaha Begum and Rasheda were admitted to Netrakona Sadar Hospital while the rest to the upazila health complex. District and Kendua upazila officials visited the affected villages yesterday morning Meanwhile, two youths were electrocuted at Siddiquepur village in Mohadevpur upzila of Naogaon dostrict yesterday morning, reports our Chapainawabganj correspondent. They were identified as Amzad Hossain, 30, son of Mohammad Baitullah, and Mohammad Shahin, 25, son of Enamul Haque. Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohadevpur Police Station said the two came in contact with a live electric wire hung by one Salem Uddin of the village on his cropland. Locals found the bodies and informed the police who rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them to Nogaon Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed against landowner Salem Uddin with Mohadevpur Police Station. Police could not arrest the accused as he had gone into hiding soon after the incident.
