The District and Sessions Judge's Court here yesterday awarded death sentence to four people and life term imprisonment to another on charge of killing a man in 2000. Judge Bimol Chandra Shikdar passed the verdict, giving death sentence to Liakat Beldar, Ferdaus Khondokar, Alam and Sona Mia and life term imprisonment to Sima Aktar. According to the case statement, Hafez Chokdar, son of Halan Chokdar of Chhilarchar village in Madaripur Sadar upazila, went to his in-laws' house at Dakkhin Crockchar village in Shibchar upazila on September 14 in 2000. Hafez's wife Sima Aktar along with her lover Liakat Beldar and three other accomplices Ferdaus Khondokar, Alam and Sona Mia took Hafez for a boat ride in adjacent Arial Kha River on the night. Later, the gang strangled Hafez Chokdar to death, tied a sand bag with the body and dumped it into the river. Four to five days after the incident, Ferdaus confessed to their crime when locals caught him and gave him a sound beating. Consequently, police recovered the body from the river according to Ferdaus' confession. The victim's father Halan Chokdar filed a murder case with Shibchar police station on September 21 in 2000. Three of the convicts, other than Sima and Ferdaus, have been absconding, court sources said.
