Robbers abduct 50 fishermen in Sundarbans
Robbers kidnapped 50 fishermen and looted their valuables worth about Tk 10 lakh at Hormal Canal in the Sundarbans on Saturday night.
The abducted fishermen are from different areas of Bagerhat and Barguna districts.
Fishermen, who returned from the Bay, told the news agency that a gang of 15to 20 robbers attacked 50 trawlers and looted fishing nets and fishes. They also took away two trawlers and kidnapped 50 fishermen.
They said the robbers demanded Tk 50,000 as ransom for release of each of the 50 fisherman and threatened to kill all the fishermen if the ransom was not paid within a week.
KM Mamunur Rashid, Staff Officer (Operation) of Coastguard Mongla (West Zone), said the coastguards have already started drives in Sundarbans areas to rescue the victims and arrest the robbers.
Police Superintendent Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said he asked the policemen of the police stations concerned to take necessary steps.
