Gopalganj Jubo League activist killed in bomb attack
Body of rice trader found in canal
A Jubo League leader, who came under bomb attack in Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Saturday night, died at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) early yesterday.
Witnesses said a gang of criminals hurled a bomb at Rezaul Karim Shahin Khan, 40, organising secretary of Jubo League Horidaspur union unit, near his Bherabazar house at around 10:00pm, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital and then shifted to KMCH where he died at 2:00am.
When the news spread in the morning, supporters of Shahin ransacked a number of houses and shops in Bherabazar area and set fire to them. They also blocked Gopalganj-Tekerhat Road for three hours from 6:00am.
Victim's wife Lovely Begum said Shahin had a conflict with one Hasmat Kazi of the area over harvesting paddy from a disputed land. He might have been killed as a sequel to the conflict, she added.
No one was arrested in connection with the murder as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. Police have been deployed in the area to avert any further clash.
Meanwhile, a rice trader was found dead in Gopalganj Sadar upazila yesterday morning.
He was identified as Zibrail Mollah, 30, of Char Pathalia village in the upazila.
Locals found the body floating on Gobra Charghata Canal at around 7:30am and informed the police who recovered the body and sent it to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
