9 Jamaat-Shibir men held in Pabna, Noakhali

Police arrested four leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and five activists of its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) in Pabna and Noakhali districts yesterday and on Saturday night. In Pabna, Bera police arrested four Jamaat leaders at Joynagar village in the upazila while they were holding a 'secret' meeting at a house on Saturday night, according to our correspondent. The arrestees are Md Abul Kashem Azad, 55, social welfare secretary of Jamaat Pabna district unit, Ataur Rahman, 35, secretary of Bera upazila unit Shawkat Hossain Faruki, 50, president of Koitola union unit, Mosharraf Hossain, 40, secretary of the same unit. Md Abdul Hai, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bera Police Station said the arrestees were holding a 'secret' meeting at the house of Jamaat leader Mosharraf Hossain at Joynagar village to launch anti-state activities. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcers raided the residence at around 10:00pm and arrested the four Jamaat leaders, the OC said. The arrestees were yesterday produced in a Pabna court that sent them to jail. Our correspondent from Noakhali reported that five activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir were arrested yesterday on charge of vandalising billboards and tearing Awami League posters in the district town. The arrestees include Abdullah-Al-Masud, secretary of Shibir municipal unit, and Fakrul Islam, president of Shibir Begumganj upazila. BNP- led 18-party alliance brought out a precession in the district town yesterday afternoon as part of its countrywide demonstration. Police said when the procession was passing the district Awami League office, some Shibir activists from the procession vandalised billboards and tore AL posters. Mosharraf Hossain Tarafdar, officer-in-charge of Sudharam Police Station, said they arrested the five from the procession for vandalising billboards and AL posters.
