Clashes over Land in Two Districts
One killed, over 100 injured
Clashes over capture of khas and disputed lands left one person dead and over 100 others injured in Satkhira and Sunamganj districts yesterday.
In Satkhira, a man was killed and at least 12 others were injured as two rival groups clashed over capture of a disputed over at village Alhadipur in Tala upazila yesterday afternoon, reports our correspondent.
The dead identified as Ashraf Ali, 30, son of Abdus Samad of the village.
Police quoted locals as saying that there had been a dispute between Sohrab Ali Morol and Abdul Aziz over the ownership of a land at the village for long.
Abdul Aziz attacked the day labourer, Ashraf Ali, engaged by Sohrab Ali for planting banana plants on the land at around 4:00pm. Ahsraf received injuries and died on the spot.
On receiving the news, Sohrab and his men rushed to the spot and locked in a clash with Aziz and his supports. At least 12 people from both sides were injured during the clash that continued for half an hour.
Being informed, police reached there and dispersed the clashing groups. They also arrested five people from the spot. They are Aziz Morol, Liakat Ali Morol, Ahad Ali, Yunus Ali, Mohsin and Raju.
The injured were admitted to Tala Upazila Health Complex.
Our staff correspondent from Sylhet reported that two groups of villagers clashed over capture of khas land at Shaktirgaon village in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district yesterday, leaving at least 100 people from both sides injured.
Police quoting locals said there had been a long standing dispute between former UP member Azam Ali and Borhan uddin of the village over capture of khas land at the village at around 9:00am.
Two supporters of Azam and Borhan had an altercation over the issue at around 9:00am. After a while, the villagers belonging to the two rivals groups locked in a fierce clash.
On information, police reached the village and fired 15 tear shells to bring the situation under control. Of the injured, seven were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital while the rest to Chhatak health complex.
