Jessore newsmen stage demonstration, submit memo to home minister

Jessore Journalists brought out a procession yesterday in the town demanding immediate arrest of the culprits who attacked their fellow newsmen during BNP-enforced daylong hartal in Abhoynagar upazila on Sunday. They also submitted a memorandum to the home minister through Deputy Commission Mir Zohirul Islam. Earlier on Monday, the journalist leaders at a meeting at Jessore Press Club threatened to launch an agitation programme if the attackers were not punished. Abhoynagar upazila unit of BNP in Jessore called the shutdown, demanding immediate arrest of the killers of Rafiqul Islam, organising secretary of the unit. Rafiqul was murdered on Friday night. A group of Jubo League activists assaulted five television journalists and damaged four video cameras when the newsmen tried to cover the hartal. The assaulted journalists are Jessore correspondents Akram Hossain of Channel i, Mamun of Desh TV, Torikul Islam Tarek of Diganta TV, and Ruhul Das of Maasranga Television and cameraman Jubair Hossain of Diganta TV. The injured correspondents were given first aid while cameraman Jubair was admitted to Jessore Sadar Hospital.
