BSF killed 71 but gave autopsy reports of only 8
Indian Border Security Force (BSF) killed at least 71 Bangladeshi nationals since January 2007, but they gave autopsy reports of only eight victims to their Bangladesh counterpart Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
However, bodies of all the killed Bangladeshis were handed over to BGB and later sent to the families of the victims, BGB sources said.
"At almost every flag meetings, we request the BSF to submit autopsy reports along with the bodies of killed Bangladeshis, but they ignore our request under various excuses," said a high official of Phulbari-3 Battalion under Dinajpur Sector, seeking anonymity.
According to the BGB sources, BSF of India killed 21, 12, 19, 11 and 5 Bangladeshi nationals in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 but they handed over autopsy reports of only one in 2007, five in 2008, and two in 2011.
No autopsy report was given with the bodies of 19 people killed in 2009.
In February and March this year, BSF killed two Bangladeshi nationals but they returned the bodies without any autopsy report to their Bangladesh counterparts.
Another Bangladeshi, Mizanur Rahman died after escaping to Bangladesh territory following severe torture by BSF at Daudpur border under Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur and his autopsy was conducted at Forensic Department of Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital on February 14 this year
BGB sources said only one Indian national was killed inside Bangladesh territory since 2007. After his death by a Bangladeshi mob at Bhaigarh border under Birampur upazila of Dinajpur district on May 11 last year, BGB arranged his autopsy at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital and later handed over the body with the report to BSF, said sources of Phulbari-40 Battalion of BGB.
"An autopsy report lets the authority know the actual cause of death of any person and nature of attacks on him/her," said Dr Mir Hamde Same, assistant professor and head of Forensic Medicine Department of Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital.
Of the 68 Bangladeshi nationals killed by BSF at different border points under Dinajpur Sector from 2007 to December 31 last year, 66 were gunned down, while two others were tortured to death, Colonel Emdadul Haque, commander of BGB Dinajpur Sector, said, adding that all the 68 bodies, returned by BSF, were handed over to their family members.
Besides, at least 26 people were wounded as they were either shot or tortured by BSF from 2007 to February 5 this year, said officials.
In 2011 Indian people beat dead a Bangladeshi national and wounded another.
There are about 400km India-Bangladesh border under Dinajpur Sector stretching from Dhamurhat of Naogaon to Atwari of Panchagarh district.
