Armed BCL men take away SAU tender papers

A group of BCL men took away tender documents from the tender box at the Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) on Monday. Sources said, the university staff could not resist them as there was no security arrangements on the last date for dropping the tenders for Tk 1 crore work. Witnesses said, about 6 to 7 young men in a private car went to the office of the Director, Planning & Development at SAU and took away the documents by breaking the lock of the tender box at about 12:30pm. The tender box was scheduled to be opened at 3pm on the day. The armed group, allegedly backed by BCL chief of Sylhet Govt College, threatened the office staff with dire consequences in case of any step against them, sources said. Contacted, SAU Director, Planning & Development, Kamal Uddin Ahmed told this correspondent that he could not raise a hue and cry at the time of the incident since the group was armed. The staff members, except for a peon, were absent, he said adding he could not identify the culprits. The official declined to give further details about the snatching of tender documents from his office. The tender would be cancelled and it would be invited afresh, he added. The Tk one crore tender was invited for completion of civil, sanitary, electrification and gas work at Abdus Samad Azad Hall. The superintending engineer of the SAU could not be contacted despite several attempts over phone.
