'Bring killers of schoolboy Jewel to book'

A human chain was formed at Chowrangi intersection of Panchagarh-Dhaka highway in Panchagarh town yesterday, demanding harsh punishment to the culprits who abducted and killed primary school student Jewel on 26 March for ransom. Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa) organised the programme which was participated by scores of women and children of the victim's villages. Earlier a procession paraded different streets of the town. Quoting arrestees' confessional statement, sub-inspector of Panchagarh police station, also investigation officer of the case, Rezaul Islam Basunia told this correspondent over cell phone that main accused Munna, 22, also tenant of Abdur Rahim (victim's father) took Jewel, 10, out of home to 'visit different places' on March 25. Then they went to Thakurgaon first. As per previous plan, Munna's accomplices Shaju and Biplop joined them at Thakurgaon bus stand. Before start of journey to Rangpur, the abductors kept Jewel's school bag at a shop at Kalibai in Thakurgaon municipality. In Rangpur, on March 26, when the boy started crying to return home, the three kidnappers decided to kill him. As the area was lonely, they took Jewel to an under construction building in front of Rangpur Cadet College and strangled him. On March 27, police arrested Munna from in front of Boda Hospital. On his confession, they went to Rangpur and recovered Jewel's body from an under construction building in front of Rangpur Cadet College. Police later arrested Saju and Biplob in connection with the abduction and killing.
