8 BCL men hurt in clash over tender dropping
At least eight people, including two police officers, were injured in a fierce clash between two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Jhalakathi district town on Wednesday night.
The injured include BCL activists Shahin, Mainul, Mithu and officer in-charge Abdul Mannan and sub-inspector Humayun Kabir of Jhalakathi Sadar police station.
The clash erupted over dropping of Jhalakathi Roads and Highway's maintenance tender worth Tk 20 lakh.
Police and locals said two factions of BCL allegedly led by Zamal Hossain Mithu, district unit secretary and Mainul Islam, municipal unit president, attacked each other with lethal weapons in front of deputy commissioner's office at about 8:30 pm over the issue, leaving over eight wounded.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control at about 10:30pm, said Habibur Rahman, additional superintendent of police.
As per the schedule, dropping of the tender procedure completed peacefully yesterday under Rab-police protection, said Shahin Sardar, executive engineer of RHD.
Meanwhile, Mithu and Mainul have been expelled from the party, said a press release signed by BCL district unit president Syed Hadisur Rahman Milon. The municipal committee was also dissolved in this connection, it added.
