Students of Government Laboratory High School in Khulna city and Arani FN Girls High School in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi yesterday took part in the English language fairs held under English in Schools programme, a joint initiative of The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi. The English language fair at Government Laboratory High School in Khulna city saw lively participation of over 450 students of the school, reports our staff correspondent. Globally famous movie The Lion King was screened, followed by quizzes on vocabulary, situation-based questions, extempore speeches, role play and etiquette test. Eighteen students took part in extempore speech, role play and vocabulary test on the occasion. Headmaster AKM Golam Azam, who inaugurated the programme at 2:00pm, urged continuation of English in Schools programme to encourage English learning among students. Arabinda Halder, an English teacher of the school, conducted the programme while three other English teachers of the school -- Kabir Alam Khan, Abdul Halim Goldar and Sanjoy Kumar Mandol acted as judges of students' performance. Our RU Correspondent reports: Over 200 students of Arani FN Girls High School in Bagha upazila in Rajshahi yesterday joined the English language fair held at the school. Aurpana Rani Haldar, assistant headmaster of the school, inaugurated the programme. The Lion King was screened, followed by quizzes on vocabulary, situation-based question answer, extempore speech and role play. Twenty students took part in different competitions. Teachers Shahidul Islam, Rabeya Akter, Poly Debnath of the school distributed prizes among the winners of different competitions of the programme. “Such programme will promote English language learning among school students,” said Aurpana Rani Haldar, assistant headmaster of the school. Aiming to promote English language learning among school students across the country, The Daily Star in cooperation with Robi undertook English in Schools programme in 2009. Under the initiative, each of one thousand schools selected from 64 districts of the country receives three complimentary copies of The Daily Star five days a week. The ongoing English language fairs at different schools are being held in coordination with the education ministry as part of the three-year-long programme.
