Allegation of corporal punishment
A college student was 'severely' punished by the principal on charge of stalking and other offences in Sadar upazila yesterday.
Rasel Islam, 18, son of Abdus Salam of Noyarhat Bhatri village, is an HSC first year student at Noyarhat Adorsho Degree College.
Rasel alleged that principal AKM Mahbubul Alam called him to his office at around 11:00am, tied him with a tree on the campus and tortured him for an hour in presence of teachers and students.
“I could not understand why the principal beat me mercilessly although I was innocent”, said Rasel.
Refuting the allegation of Rasel, Mahbubul, also founder of the college, said he gave the student simple punishment for stalking female students for long and committing other offences.
Earlier, the college management committee issued a temporary suspension notice on Rasel for such unwanted activities three months ago, he added.
Rabiul Islam Robi, a lecturer of the college, said the principal gave corporal punishment to Rasel as he did not attend classes regularly and committed a number of offences.
Meanwhile, Rasel's mother Arzina Begum said her son was not involved in any offences.
Abdus Salam said, they did not file any complaint over the issue as the principal was a very influential man in the area.
