Schoolboy kidnapped for ransom in Panchagarh

Criminals kidnapped a primary school student for ransom on Sunday on his way to school in Panchagarh town. The victim was identified as Md Jewel, 10, son of Abdur Rahim Khoka and student of Class III at Panchagarh 2 No. Government Primary School. Officer in-charge of Panchagarh police station Humayun Kabir told this correspondent over cell phone, quoting victim's family members, that Jewel went out of house at 9:00am for his school and since he did not return home. Later, a gang made a phone call in the evening to victim's father Abdur Rahim, a small trader of second hand clothes and banana, and demanded Tk 2 lakh as ransom for release of the boy. They also asked him to go to Rangpur alone with the money. When Abdur Rahim agreed to it they asked him to meet at medical intersection. Rahim went to Rangpur on Sunday night with Tk 25,000 but the gang did not turn up and their cell phone was off. In Sirajganj, criminals have demanded Tk 6 lakh toll from a farmer of Raiganj upazila and threatened to kill his two children in case of failure to pay the money. The family filed a general diary with Raiganj PS in this connection, reports our correspondent. According to the GD, Sadhan Chandra Sarker of Bhuyagati village in Raiganj upazila has two children. Criminals demanded the toll on March 22 night over mobile phone and ordered Sadhan to keep the money at a bamboo cluster behind his house. They repeated their demand again on March 24 morning through the same mobile phone. Contacted, Obaidul Haque, OC of Raiganj police station said that the matter is under investigation.
