Four bullet-hit as Galachipa mayor opens fire on farmers
At least four female farmers were bullet injured during a clash over a fish enclosure in Char Bestin under newly formed Rangabali upazila as Abdul Ohab Khalifa, owner of the enclosure, opened fire on the agitated local people at about 6.30pm yesterday.
Khalifa is also the mayor of Galachipa municipality and vice-president of Galachipa upazila Awami League (AL).
The bullet-hit were identified as Saleha Begum, 35, Jasmin Begum, 30, Rezia Begum, 35, and Hanufa Begum, 32, all residents of Char Bestin.
Of the injured, Saleha Begum was hit in her head.
Mahe Alam, OC of Rangabali police station told this correspondent that the mayor fired from his shotgun during the incident.
But the OC claimed that only Saleha Begum was hit by bullet while others were injured during chase and counter chase between rival groups.
OC of Rangabali PS said, the incident occurred when Khalifa recently lifted saline water for his fish enclosure from a nearby river. Local farmers protested it as saline water affects their agri land.
At a stage, over 100, including a good number of female farmers, yesterday went to the enclosure and cut down the dam to remove the saline water.
