English language fairs under English in Schools, a joint initiative of The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi, were held at four schools in Jamalpur and Pabna districts yesterday. Over 400 students of Ulfatunnesa Government Girls' High School, Nur Mohammad High School and Nilakhia RJ Pilot High School in Bakshiganj upazila under Jamalpur district took part in the English language fair held at the girls' high school yesterday, reports a correspondent from Jamalpur. Mohammad Ali, headmaster of Ulfatunnesa Government Girls' High School, inaugurated the programme. Globally renowned movie The Lion King was screened followed by quizzes on vocabulary, one-ward questions, situation-based questions, extempore speeches and role play. Students of the three schools took part in joyful interactions and watched the events based on the movie. Ten students took part in role play event while 20 others participated in the quizzes based on the movie. Later prizes were distributed among the winners. Participants at the fair praised the role of English in Schools programme in helping village children to learn English with ease. Our Pabna Correspondent reports: Over 200 students of Atghoria Pilot School joined the English language fair held at the school premises yesterday. Headmaster of the school Md Belal Hossain inaugurated the fair at about 10:00am while Md Arshed Ali, English teacher of the school, judged the students' performance. Twenty-five students took part in extempore test, role play and vocabulary test on the occasion. Globally renowned movie The Lion King was screened, followed by quizzes on vocabulary, extempore speeches, etiquette test and role play. “The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi have created the opportunity for village children to learn English through reading newspaper and taking part in such programmes,” the headmaster said. Aiming to promote English language learning among school students across the country, The Daily Star in cooperation with Robi undertook English in Schools programme in 2009. Under the initiative, each of one thousand schools selected from 64 districts of the country receives three complimentary copies of The Daily Star five days a week. The ongoing English language fairs at different schools are being held in coordination with the education ministry as part of the three-year-long programme.
