Teacher shortage hampers pry edn in Sylhet division

Academic activities at government primary, registered and community schools in the division are being hampered seriously due to shortage of teachers. Sources said, at least 2,288 posts of teachers have been lying vacant in primary schools of the division for long while 1,942 teachers are working without taking any training. Despite acute shortage of teachers, the government appears to be reluctant to fill up the posts lying vacant for long, local people alleged. Besides, a good number of children remained deprived of education due to lack of primary schools in many remote villages in the division. There are 606 primary schools in Moulvibazar district , while 179 in Habiganj, 60 in Sylhet and 100 in Sunamganj under the division. According to district education officials, some 20,700 primary teachers are now working against the total posts of 22,991 in the division. At least 770 posts of teachers are lying vacant in Sylhet since long while 773 in Sunamganj, 393 in Habiganj and 1352 in Moulvibazar. According to the sources, 149 posts of headmasters and 463 posts of assistant teachers in the government primary schools, 44 posts of headmasters and 31 posts of assistant teachers in registered primary schools and 6 posts of headmasters and 31 posts of assistant teachers in community primary schools are lying vacant in the division.
