Protesters block roads, besiege PBS office

People of Paglapir area in the outskirts of the town and Pirgachha upazila in the district blocked Dhaka-Rangpur and Rangpur-Paotana roads yesterday demanding uninterrupted power supply. Over a thousand people besieged the head office of Rangpur Palli Biddyut Samity-2, and later put up barricade on Dhaka-Rangpur Highway at Paglapir from 12am to 2pm putting logs of trees and bamboos on the road. Scores of buses and trucks got stuck on the road, causing much sufferings to the people. The angry people also tried to enter the Palli Biddyut Samity office and pelted stones and brickbats at the officials. “The villagers want 24 hour power supply but it is quite impossible for us. We are undone as power distribution is centrally controlled" said Tofazzal Hossain, GM of Rangpur Palli Biddyut Samity-2. It Pirgachha, people staged angry demonstration and put up barricade on Rangpur-Paotana Road at Damurchakla point from 8am to 10am. Hundreds of vehicles on both sides of the road remained stranded due to the road blockade.
