Students of six schools in Chittagong, Pabna, Tangail and Bagerhat districts took part in yesterday's English language fairs held under English in Schools programme jointly organised by The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi. The English language fair held at PH Amin Academy in Chittagong city comprised contests on vocabulary, moral lessons, extempore speech and role play, and screening of The Lion King, a globally renowned movie, reports our correspondent. Atul Kumar Roy, headmaster of the high school, attended the programme as chief guest. “Being an international language, English is very important for us. In our country, students have a fear of learning and speaking English. I think such fairs will help to remove their fear,” he said, urging all to give importance to learning English alongside the mother tongue. Students at the fair entertained the audience by reciting poems, telling jokes and singing songs. Later, prizes were distributed among the winners. Moshiur Rahman Babu, consumer sales and service manager of Robi in the city, was also present at the programme. Our Pabna Correspondent reports: Students of Pabna Zila School, Pabna Adarsha Girls' High School and Sujanagar Model Pilot School in the district took part in the English language fairs organised under English in Schools programme yesterday. Over 300 students of Pabna Zila School and Adarsha Girls' High School participated in the English language fair at Adarsha Girls' School premise. Nineteen students of the two schools participated in events including role play and contests on vocabulary and quizzes. In Sujanagar Model Pilot School, over 200 students participated in the English language fair. Fifteen students of the school participated in different competitions on English language. The Lion King was screened, followed by quizzes on vocabulary, extempore speeches, etiquette test and role play. Our Tangail Correspondent reports: Around 150 students of Ghatail SE Pilot Girls High School in Ghatail upazila under the district took part in joyful activities at the language fair held at the school auditorium. Following screening of The Lion King, the students participated in spot quiz, vocabulary test, one word question and quick questions -- all based on the movie. Selected students also took part in extempore speech on different topics and role-play. Later prizes were distributed among the winners of different completions. The students of the school also formed an English language club. Our Bagerhat Correspondent adds: An English language fair under English in Schools programme was held at Mongla Bondor School and College in Mongla municipality under the district yesterday morning. The programme included presentation of The Lion King, onward question-answer session, situation-based questions, role play, extempore speech etc. Later prizes ware distributed among the winners. Md Eunus Ali, headmaster of the school, presided over the programme conducted by Mahmudul Hasan Rakib, an official of Robi. Under the English in Schools programme initiated in 2009, The Daily Star and Robi are jointly organising the fairs in coordination with the education ministry to encourage English language learning among high school students across the country.
