Patuakhali Government College was declared closed for three days yesterday following a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and outsiders. The authorities also asked the students to vacate their dormitories by the evening. Police arrested seven people in this connection. The arrestees are Golam Mostafa, 22, Eyamin, 22, Jahidul, 20, Bayazeed, 20, Noman, 20, Atik Hasan, 20 and Arif, 22. Police and college sources said Sohanur Rahman and Sagor, both students of General History department, lived at Mia Villa, a private hostel near the college. On Sunday midnight, Joni, son of Yunus Mia, owner of the hostel, assaulted the duo on charge of stealing his mobile phone. The two were taken to Patuakhali General Hospital for treatment, said Prof Pranesh Kanti Sikder, principal of the college. On information, over 100 agitated students ransacked the hostel at about 10:00am yesterday as police could not arrest the alleged attacker despite filing a complaint. They also vandalised at least five auto-rickshaws kept inside the hostel. Following the incident, scores of party workers led by Sahin Mridha, president of Bangabandhu Sainik League district unit, went to the campus and attacked two activists of BCL college unit Parvez and Rasel. As the news spread, chase and counter chase between the activists of Bangabandhu Sainik League and BCL hampered the movement of all kinds of vehicles on college road for a few hours. Immediately after the incident, the authorities announced the collage closed for three days. Contacted, Shanur Haque Sujon, secretary of BCL district unit, said some outsiders were responsible for the unwanted situation on the campus.
