Panchagarh police press charges against 14, finally
Two 'main accused' dropped

Faruk HossainPolice in Panchagarh have pressed charges against 14 leaders and activists of AL and Jubo League in the case of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Faruk Hossain murder case.
Two out of the 16 FIR-named accused have been left out of the charge sheet submitted on March 15, said police.
The two are publicity secretary of district unit Awami League Toyabur Rahman alias Abu and general secretary of district unit Krishak League Amirul Islam.
Of the charge-sheeted accused, nine are still at large.
On April 9, 2010, Faruk, 17, organising secretary of ward no1 BCL unit in Panchagarh municipality and son of Akbar Ali of Mithapukur village, was killed in a clash at around 2:30pm.
Earlier in the day, an altercation took place between the activists of BCL and Jubo League at Panchagarh upazila nirbahi office over dropping of tender.
At one stage, the Jubo League men attacked BCL activists with sharp weapons, leaving
11 people injured including Faruk. He was rushed to Thakurgaon Hospital in critical condition where he died.
The following day, the victim's elder brother Fazlul Haque filed a murder case with Panchagarh police station accusing 16 people.
The accused are Abu, Amirul, district unit office secretary of AL Julfiker Ali alias Juli, joint secretary of district unit Jubo League Aminul Islam alias Gurbabu, finance secretary Meraj Hossain alias Rinku, AL member Labu, general secretary of Panchagarh municipality unit Jubo League Asaduzzaman alias Swadhin, president of Ward-4 Jubo League unit Aminul Islam, vice-president of the same ward Hazrat Ali, Jubo League activists Liton, Mizanur Rahaman, Mostafizur Rahaman, Anisur Rahman, Nobin, Tori and Mohsin.
On investigation, Mohinul Islam, sub-Inspector of the PS, submitted the charge sheet to Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on Thursday last. The court fixed April 4 as the next date of hearing in the case, the SI added.
Local party men expressed mixed reaction as the two accused have been left out of the charge sheet.
Organising secretary of district unit AL Ariful Islam told this correspondent that police placed a charge sheet as if themselves acquitting the two main accused.

He also demanded reinvestigation into the case so that the main offenders could not escape the trial.
Fazlul Haque said, police at last placed the charge sheet in the offence that took place two years ago. “Better late than never”, he said.
