At least 24 people were sued yesterday on charge of attacking a team led by upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Ghoraghat upazila on Saturday afternoon. Illegal sand lifters chased UNO Maksuda Begum Siddiqua and left Md. Mofazzal Hossain Prodhan, UP chairman of Bulakipur union in the upazila, also president of UP unit of AL, severely injured. Md. Masud Rana, son of the injured UP chairman, filed the case with Ghoraghat police station. Police said they have already identified seven of the accused. Md. Akhtar Hossain, officer in-charge of Ghoraghat police station said, police are yet to arrest anyone in connection with the case. On hearing the news of the attack, angry villagers of Bulakipur union blocked Dinajpur-Dhaka highway at Raniganj Bazaar and Hakimpur-Bogra link road in Dugdugi area of the upazila on Saturday evening. The blockade ended at 10.00 at night after Dr. Azizul Haque Chowdhury, local lawmaker, Md. Abdul Maleque, additional district magistrate and Moinul Islam, police superintendent of Dinajpur, rushed to the spot and assured the villagers of arresting the accused immediately. The villagers alleged that the illegal sand lifters could attack and injure the chairman because of the neglect of the policemen who accompanied the mobile court. The lawmaker assured the villagers of taking lawful action in case of negligence by the policemen. Witnesses said, the UNO of Ghoraghat along with UP chairman of Bulakipur and five policemen went to Kulanandapur village on receiving a complaint that illegal sand lifters were taking away sand from Karatoa river. As they arrived there, a group of people numbering around 100, equipped with sticks and sharp weapon, attacked on them, leaving the UP chairman seriously injured on the spot. Locals rescued the UP chairman and rushed him to upazila health complex in Ghoraghat. Later, doctors shifted him to Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital at night. Doctors said that the UP chairman was still in critical condition as the criminals stabbed him in several parts of his body.
