Shop owners protest acts of muscleman

Hundreds of shop owners at Gobra Bazar in Sadar upazila yesterday kept their shutters down for four hours and blocked Narail-Noapara road demanding punishment to a local influential person. The road barricade left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road creating a huge tailback. The protesters also brought out a procession and held a rally in the bazar area. Expressing solidarity, the villagers also joined the shop owners. Anwar Hossain, a shop owner at the market said that Julfikar Ali Bhutto, a local influential man, also a shop owner always misbehaved and assaulted other traders. Uzzal, another shop owner said that Bhutto recently beat up four staffs including a woman of Grameen Bank branch at the bazar for ransom. When we went to the spot and protested, he threatened to set fire to my shop. President of Gobra Bonik Samity Gautam said that Bhutto is a man of union parishad chairman and also an activist of local AL. "We again and again complained to the chairman about his misdeeds but to no effect," he said. Yesterday all the shop owners at the bazar decided to keep their shutters down and block Narail-Noapara road, demanding punishment to Bhutto.
