Killing of college student sparks agitation

Several hundred locals of Chakrampur Moholla in Naogaon municipal area formed human chain, held rally and blocked Naogaon-Bogra road of Naogaon town yesterday, demanding arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers of a college student. Speakers at a rally, held in Tulshiganga area, said that victim Rabbi Hasan, a HSC student of Shantahar Government College, was brutally killed on February 21. Rabbi went to his cousin's house at Dogachi village in Sadar upazila on the day and locked in an altercation with his maternal uncles over a piece of disputed land. At one stage, his relatives beat him up mercilessly leaving him dead on the spot. Victim's father Saiful Islam filed a murder case with Naogaon model police station the same day, but police are yet to arrest the killers. The protesters demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers. They also gave an ultimatum to the police saying they would call a hartal in Naogaon town if the accused were not arrested within 72 hours. Sohel Rana, ward commissioner of Naogaon municipality, Shahidul Islam, Kamal Hossain, victim's father Saiful Islam spoke at the rally, among others. The angry locals then staged a roadblock for an hour from 11:00am. They withdrew their programme after police rushed to the spot and assured them of taking steps to arrest the killers.
