The Department of Environment (DoE) destroyed two illegal brick kilns in Bera upazila under the district on Sunday, following an order by the High Court to stop operation of all illegal brick fields in Pabna. A mobile court headed by DoE Deputy Director (DD) Md Saifullah Talukdar destroyed Al-Madina Brick Field at Aminpur village and Khanpur Brick Field at Charpara Khanpur village in Bera upazila on charge of continuing illegal operation in defiance of earlier notices, said the DoE official. The upazila administration and law enforcers assisted the mobile court during the drive. “The two brick fields were using illegal drum chimney in violation of environment rules. Ignoring our notices, their owners continued brick manufacturing. And so, we have destroyed the kilns,” Saifullah Talukdar said. “We will continue drives to close all the illegal brick fields in Pabna district as the High Court issued an order in this regard. The order passed on February 29 has reached the Department of Environment and district and police administrations,” he added. Earlier on February 23, The Daily Star ran a report titled 'Brick kiln gives short shrift to DoE' with the photo of Al Madina Brick Field, depicting how the drum chimney using kiln, set up amid farmlands, was operating in violation of environment rules. Over 40 illegal brick fields in Pabna district are operating with environmentally harmful drum chimneys, said sources of Brick Field Owners Association.
