A group of influential land grabbers are illegally constructing structures on about 25 decimal railway land at Mogholhat railway gate in Lalmonirhat town. Although the land worth about Tk 2.5 crore was occupied a week ago, railway authorities are yet to take any action to free the land as the culprits are men of ruling Awami League, said locals. Demanding steps to free the railway land from the grabbers, local people yesterday submitted a memorandum to the Divisional Railway Manager of Lalmonirhat West Zone. However, they did not mention the names of grabbers in fear of reprisal. If the railway authorities fail to take immediate action regarding the matter, the organised gang will continue grabbing more railway land in the town, they said. Contacted, the officer in charge of Lalmonirhat railway police station Sirajul Haque said, "I heard about the land grabbing at Mogholhat railway gate but I cannot make a move without orders from railway high officials. I am ready to take necessary action to free the land from the grabber gang if the Lalmonirhat railway authorities give me order." Contacted, Lalmonirhat Railway Divisional Estate Officer Abu Sayeed said, "On February 27, I informed the chief estate officer in Rajshahi of the matter and sought his order to take action against the organised gang but I am yet to get any reply till now." “The gang tried several times to take lease of the land from my office but I directly declined their request,” he said. Lalmonirhat West Zone Railway Divisional Manager Abdul Hai said, "Following written allegations from locals, I have ordered the Lalmonirhat railway divisional estate officer to take step against the grabbers and free the land by demolishing all illegal structures on it."
