Two killed, 60 hurt as rival villagers clash

Two people were killed and at least 60 others injured in two incident of clashes between rival groups of villagers in Brahmanbaria and Madaripur districts yesterday. A man was killed and over 50 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Bhoirabnagar village in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria yesterday. Police said over 100 houses were also looted and damaged during the two-hour long clash. The deceased was identified as Abul Miah, 35, son of Dhanu Miah of the village, reports UNB. Police and witnesses said, there had a longstanding dispute between Taher Miah and Yunus Miah over establishing supremacy at the village. As a sequel to the conflict, Taher Miah and his cohorts locked in an altercation with their rivals over a trifling matter in the morning. Later, both the groups equipped with lethal weapons and sticks attacked each other, killing Abul Miah on the spot and injuring over 50 people from both sides. On information, police rushed to the spot and charged batons on the rowdy villagers to disperse them. They also arrested four people from the spot. Among the injured, two were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while the rest taken to local hospitals and clinics. In another clash on the previous day, at least 20 people were injured at Goalnagar village in Nasirnagar upazila. Locals said there was a longstanding enmity between Gias Uddin and Abul Kashem of the village over a piece of land. They said an altercation ensued between them over the matter in the morning. Later, both the groups equipped with lethal weapons and sticks locked into an hour-long clash that left 20 people injured from both sides. Of the injured, Habibur Rahman, 38, Abul Hossain, 45, Akter Hossain, 30, Zakir Hossain, 35, and Din Islam, 23, were admitted to different hospitals and clinics in critical condition while others were released after first aid. In Madaripur, a man was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups over a piece of disputed land at Beparikandi village in Shibchar upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Fazlu Akhand, 57, of the village, reports the wire service. Officer in-charge (OC) of Shibchar PS said Fazlu and his nephew Badsha Akhand had long been at loggerheads over the ownership of the land. The clash ensued as Badsha locked in an altercation with his uncle over the issue at about 10:00 am. At one stage, Badsha hacked Fazlu with a sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured. Hearing the news, supporters of Fazlu attacked Badsha and his men, triggering a violent clash that left 10 people from both sides injured. Fazlu was taken to the local health complex where doctors declared him dead.
