The High Court on Thursday called for records of a case filed over the lashing of a housewife and her husband's friend in Naogaon to examine how eight out of the 12 accused in the case got bail. During the hearing of a rule, the court directed Naogaon's chief judicial magistrate to send the records by March 5. It ordered the officer-in-charge (OC) of Raninagar Police Station of Naogaon to file an application with the district court concerned to cancel the bail by March 4 and arrest the remaining four accused immediately. The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim directed the OC, Shahriar Khan, to appear before it on March 8 to inform the order's progress. The daily Prothom Alo, in a February 22 report, stated that the duo were lashed a total 101 times and fined Tk 5,000 in an arbitration at Raninagar upazila on February 17. The punishment came after one arbitrator, Afzal Hossain, accused them of having an extramarital affair. But the OC did not take any action over the incident, said the report. Police later filed a case against the 12 accused, eight of whom were released on bail, the OC told the HC on Thursday. Within hours of the report, the HC issued a suomoto rule and summoned the OC, local madrasa teacher Noor Alam and village arbitrators, Afzal, Mofazzal Hossain and Azizul Haque, on Thursday to explain their roles in the incident. Advocate SM Rezaul Karim appeared for the OC and four others while Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain represented the government.
