Dispute over ownership of UP office land

A businessman on Thursday hung a signboard claiming ownership of the land where Jamalpur union parishad had been running its office and activities for years. UP office sources said the land was taken from the local land office on lease in 1973 and land taxes were paid regularly. The businessman, Raziul Islam, owner of Razzak Food and Industries, claimed that he bought 0.54 acres of land from the ministry of jute and textiles in February last year. On information, upazila nirbahi officer Touhidul Islam and assistant commissioner of land Shafiqul Islam went to the spot with police and removed the signboard. Chairman of Jamalpur union parishad while showing documents told this correspondent that the UP took lease of the land from local land office on 20 January, 1973 and since then they had been paying land taxes. On Thursday, Raziul Islam came to union parishad with a group of people and fixed three signboards on the premises. As per the signboards, Raziul is the legitimate owner of 0.54 acres of land. Raziul Islam told this correspondent that he bought the land from the ministry at a cost of Tk 31 lakh 76 thousand. He said, in February last year he bought it after being selected as the highest bidder. As per the tender, the ministry was supposed to handover the land on 21 August in 2011, he said. Assistant commissioner of land Shafiqul Islam told this correspondent that the union parishad took lease of the land in 1973 after it was declared a vested property. "We are looking into the matter as to how the land was sold by ministry", he said. Upazila nirbahi officer Touhidul Islam said, after it was sold the ministry was supposed to ask the local administration to handover the land. "But we are yet to receive any such message from the ministry", he said.
