2 children rescued, six alleged traffickers held

Police rescued two children on Wednesday and arrested six alleged child traffickers from Chittagong in this connection on Tuesday. The arrestees are Suman Sarkar Rana, Abdul Quader, Rita Chowdhury, Bappi Chowdhury, Reena Sardar and Md Abu Bakkar. Police said one of the rescued, three-year-old Nazmul Islam, went missing from Bayezid area on February 3. When the father, the arrested Suman, expressed reluctance in searching for the boy, the mother informed locals. When the locals caught and started beating Sumon in a local market on February 21, police detained him. Sumon confessed to being involved with a child trafficking gang. As per his information, police made the remaining arrests from the Chittagong city and the district's Patia and Lohagara upazilas. The arrestees revealed Nazmul's location, in the residence of one, Sujit Sardar, at Lohagara, and of the second 27-day-old child, Fatema Khatun, in the residence of the arrested Abdul Quader in Nainkhan area of Patia. Fatema, daughter of one, Nasima Akhter, went missing from Shantinagar area on February 16. Sumon had sold Nazmul to Sujit for Tk 60,000 and Fatema to Quader for Tk 70,000, said Sub-Inspector Quamruzzaman of Bayezid Police Station. Sumon, who has four wives, marries divorcee women who have children to sell them off, he added.
