Four RU Shibir men arrested

Police arrested four Islami Chhatra Shibir activists of Rajshahi University unit on Wednesday night, including its general secretary, in connection with February 9, 2010 campus violence. The arrestees are RU unit Shibir General Secretary Ashraful Alam Emon, a final year student of History department, Tahadul Islam, a fourth year student of Material Science department, Mizanur Rahman first year student of the same department, and Abdur Rahman of Islamic Studies department. The arrestees were sent to jail after being produced before Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate court yesterday. Police said on information that a group of Shibir men were holding a clandestine meeting at a students' mess at Octroymore of Kazla area adjacent to the university, they conducted a drive there and arrested the Shibir men at around 8:30pm. Following the incident, over one hundred leaders and activists of Shibir brought out a procession at the university near Binodpur area protesting the arrest of the Shibir men, which spread panic on the campus. RU Proctor Prof Chowdhury Muhammad Zakaria said additional police had been deployed on the campus to avert any untoward situation.
