If students concentrate well in school classes, there is no need for them to go to tutorials or coaching centres, parents were told at a memorial meeting yesterday. “Do you not have faith in schools?” said AKM Shamsul Azam, President of The Gregorian Association (TGA) in a question directed to parents. “So, why send them [students] to tutorials?” “Tutorials exist just for the sake of [obtaining] GPA 5, not to provide fundamental education offered in schools,” he said. The memorial service for Brother Thomas More (Edward) Beere, late headmaster of St. Gregory's High School, was organised on the school premises yesterday. The schoolteachers and students along with the association (TGA) jointly organised the programme in remembrance of the late headmaster who passed away on December 22 last year at the age of 88 in the Holly Cross Village at Notre Dame, Indiana. Thomas, born in Wisconsin in 1924, joined the school in 1950 and served as its headmaster from 1962 to 1968. Recalling memories of the late headmaster, the speakers said Brother Thomas was a great teacher and mentor. Brother Robi Purification, the present headmaster of the school, present teachers and members of TGA spoke at the programme.
