At least 500 pigeons were poisoned to death at Toilkup village in Kaliganj upazila of the district on Friday. Locals said one Amjad Ali sowed wheat seeds on one bigha of land. Later, he sowed 20 kg seeds mixed with poison to save his crop land from attacks by birds and insects. After having poison mixed wheat, at least 500 pigeons belonging to Abdul Aziz, Momidul Islam, Sher Ali, 45 Kurban Ali, Choto Moni, and Minto Alim of the village died. They filed a complaint with Kaliganj Police Station yesterday demanding lawful action against Amjad. Contacted, Amjad Ali admitted to sowing poison mixed wheat seeds on his field. He said he could hardly imagine the tragic consequences of this act. Villagers found the dead birds lying on crop lands at the village yesterday. They condemned this cruel act and also demanded exemplary punishment to the wheat grower. Abdul Aziz, who has lost at least 200 pigeons, filed a written complaint with Kaliganj Policec Station yesterday. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamruzzaman of the police station said he will investigate the matter and take necessary action against the person responsible.
