Police intercept BNP procession, foil meeting in Lalmonirhat
Police intercepted a BNP procession in Patgram upazila town and then foiled a meeting at the party office yesterday morning.
Local unit of the opposition party took up the programme to protest against filing of two cases against 150 BNP leaders, workers, including district unit President Asadul Habib Dulu and General Secretary Hafizur Rahman Babla, by two ruling party men with Lalmonirhat Sadar police station on Saturday night.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jubayer Hossain told this correspondent that one case was filed by Mohendra Nagar union BCL activist Enamul Haque and the other by AL district unit Publicity Secretary Zohurul Haque Mamun following Burir Bazar and Haribhanga incidents that took place on Friday and Saturday nights.
Both the cases were filed under the Speedy Trial Act and Police have already arrested six of the 150 accused, the ASP added.
BCL activist Enamul was stabbed by JCD men at Burir Bazar in Sadar upazila on Friday night and AL leader Mamun and seven other party men were injured in an attack by BNP activists at Haribhanga in the district town on Saturday night.
Salauzzaman Opel, president of BNP Patgram municipality unit, alleged that police and AL men foiled their rally at the upazila BNP office at around 10:30am.
When contacted over cellphone, Lalmonirhat district BNP President Asadul Habib Dulu said 'false' cases were filed against 150 BNP men. He demanded immediate withdrawal of the cases. Otherwise, the BNP leader threatened to launch a tougher agitation programme in the diastrict.
