Three businessmen, taken hostage by a gang for ransom in Dinajpur on Saturday, were rescued early yesterday. Police arrested one of the gang members named Shariful Islam, 29, son of Aminul Islam of Gulihara village in Kaharol upazila of the district. The rescued businessmen are Zahurul Islam, 45, of Chapai village, Paul Costa, 50, and Anisur Rahman, 35, of Joynabari village under Savar police station. Zahurul deals in jhut (garment rejects) while Paul and Anisur do stone business. Police quoting the victims said they along with two of their employess--Md Jewel and Nazmul--left Saver for Sirajganj and Dinajpur on November 10. After visiting some areas in Sirajganj, they arrived in Dinajpur the following day. At Jewel's request, the businessmen left for Biral upazila in the district to visit his (Jewel's) house the same day. But Nazmul and Jewel took the businessmen to Guliara village in Kaharol upazila and confined them to a room of one Sadeque Ali's house at the village. Nazmul and Jewel with the help of their accomplices beat up the businessmen and demanded a ransom of Tk10 lakh from their families, police said. Families of the three agreed to pay the ransom and sent the amount on Sunday through SA Paribahan parcel service. They also informed Savar police of the matter. Savar police immediately sent a message to Dinajpur police headquarters. Being informed, plainclothes police took position at SA Paribahan counter at Kalitola in Dinajput town. As Shariful, one of the accomplices of Nazmul and Jewel, arrived there at around 8.40pm to take the money, police caught him red-handed and took him to Diajpur police station. As per his statement, police raided the house at Guliara village early yesterday and rescued the businessmen from captivity. They (police) could not arrest the other gang members as they fled the scene, sensing the presence of the law enforcers. Paul Costa filed a case with Dinajpur police station. Police said they are looking for other members of the gang.
