8 Lalmonirhat AL men hurt in BNP attack
Eight leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies were injured in an attack by BNP men in Lalmonirhat town on Saturday night.
The incident took place in Haribhanga area at around 8:30pm while the ruling party men were going to Mohendra Nagar near the town to attend a meeting of local AL unit.
Locals said the attack was a sequel to Friday night's incident at Burir Bazar in Sadar upzila. BCL men set fire to a BNP office and ransacked five shops after JCD activists stabbed a BCL worker at the bazar at around 9:00pm.
The AL men injured in Saturday night's attack include Zohurul Haque Mamun, 42, publicity secretary of Lalmonirhat district AL, Kazi Nazrul Islam, 44, convener of district Sramik League, Saiful Islam, 41, secretary of district Swechchasebok League, Abdul Khaleque Babu, 33, president of BCL district unit and Mehedi Hasan, 28, district BCL general secretary.
Officer in-charge of Lalmonirhat police station Jamir Uddin quoted the injured as saying that at least 30 BNP activists stopped their motorbikes in Haribhanga area on Saturday night, attacked them with iron rods and damaged three motorbikes.
Immediately after the incident, district AL general Secretary advocate Motiar Rahman alleged at a press conference that BNP activists had made several attacks on AL men in the district after the Burir Bazar incident on Friday night.
Refuting the allegations, BNP district unit President Asadul Habib Dulu said 10 leaders and workers of BNP and its associate bodies were injured in AL and police attacks on Saturday.
