Operation Sundarbans-3 has been intensified following Saturday's gunfight between pirates and law enforcers, officials said. Two pirates of infamous Raju Bahini were killed in a three-hour-long gunfight in Vedkhali Canal area of the Sundarbans at around 10:00am on Saturday. Jointly launched by coastguards, Rab, navy and forest guards in October this year, operation Sundarbans is aimed at combating rampant piracies and kidnappings of fishermen in the world's largest mangrove forest for ransom. Sundarbans Forest Division sources said the law enforcers have intensified the drive to arrest the pirates and the ringleaders of 12 notorious gangs. At least 25 pirates were killed in gunfights with law enforcers and clashes between the rival gangs in the last two years. Of them, 13 were killed in gunfights with law enforces while the rest in clashes between the rival gangs, sources added. Meanwhile, two cases were yesterday filed with Dakope Police Station in Khulna district in connection with Saturday's gunfight. Matiar Rahman, deputy assistant director of Rab-6 lodged the cases-one under Sections 302 and 334 of Bangladesh Penal Code (BPC) and the other under the Arms Act--with the police station at around 11:30am.
