Poultry in populated areas protested in Panchagarh
Hundreds bring out procession, hold rally
Hundreds of people brought out a procession at a village in Sadar upazila of Panchagarh on Friday afternoon protesting setting up of poultry farms in densely populated areas.
After the procession at Pukhuridanga village, a rally was held at a local school where joint secretary of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) central committee Nazmul Haque Prodhan among others spoke while former schoolteacher Kamaluddin Ahmed chaired it.
The speakers alleged that ignoring all government rules a business establishment was setting up a poultry farm in Pukhuridanga village.
The farm authorities did not take permission from the Directorate of Environment or local administration, they alleged.
They said there are seven different educational institutions and about 10,000 people living within one square kilometer area where the poultry farm is being set up. If the farm is set up it will pose health hazard to the locals, they added.
The speakers said the same farm is operating poultry farms in different areas including Shalbahan, Moindandighi of the district creating big trouble for the people of those localities. Bad odour has made their life difficult, they said.
Despite submitting several complaints, the farm authority is yet to solve the matter.
Locals submitted written complaints also to the DG of Directorate of Environment, deputy commissioner of Panchagarh demanding immediate steps to stop poultry farm's operation in the area, the speakers said.
They also expressed the fear that if the poultry farm is set up in the village diseases like bird flu may infect the people in the surrounding areas.
Contacted, assistant manager of the aforesaid farm told this correspondent that they took permission from 'proper authority' for setting up the poultry farm.
