UPDF activist shot dead in Rangamati
An activist of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) was killed and another injured as unknown assailants opened fire on them yesterday morning at Ghuichhari village of the district.
Anti-peace treaty UPDF in a press release blamed Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS), a pro-peace treaty body, for the incident at Ghuichhari, 25km off Jurachhari upazila.
PCJSS, however, rejected the allegation.
The deceased was identified as Amulyo Dhan Chakma alias Rigen, 43, of Toichakma Larma Para village in Naniachar upazila of the district while the injured as Samiran Chakma, 36, of Kiyangpara village in Jurachhari.
A group of armed criminals waylaid Rigen when he along with some villagers was going to a local market around 8:30am. The criminals opened fire on them killing Rigen on the spot and injuring another, said Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jurachhari Police Station.
Bullet-hit Samiran was rushed to Rangamati General Hospital, Jurachhari police said. Rigen's body was handed over to his relatives after an autopsy at the hospital.
"The deceased was a member of UPDF," the OC said adding that police were yet to identify the criminals.
Sajib Chakma, assistant publicity secretary of PCJSS central committee, however, said UPDF's internal conflict might have caused the murder. "PCJSS does not believe in terrorism and killing," he added.
The killing incident took place a day after two indigenous men were gunned down at Bhuiyachhara in Baghaichhari upazila.
