Gunfight over share of Eid cattle market money: 40 injured
At least 40 people were injured in a gunfight between two groups of people in Aldi area under Tongibari upazila of the district yesterday morning.
Police and locals said the clash ensued at around 9:00am between the supporters of Noor Mohammad, chairman of Kathadia-Shimulia Union Parisad (UP), and Shamsuddin Miah, a member of Ward No 6 of the union, over share of money earned from the local Eid cattle market.
The clashing groups also barricaded Aldi-Dighirpar road, set a number of houses afire and exploded bombs during the clash.
Of the injured, Gulibi Hasina, 25, Idris, 28, Jasim, 40, and Awlad were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition while the rest to Munshiganj General Hospital.
Being informed, law enforcers from Tongibari Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. They also removed the road barricade at around 1:00am.
No one was arrested in connection with the incident as of filing of this report at around 5:00pm yesterday.
Contacted, Additional Police Superintendent Md Saiful Islam said police have launched a drive to arrest the persons involved in the gunfight and recover the firearms used during the clash.
A large number of police have been deployed in the area to avoid further trouble, he added.
A scuffle broke out between the supporters of Noor Mohammad and Shamsuddin over the issue on Tuesday night and both sides chased each other during the clash. Yesterday's gunfight was a sequel to the incident, locals said.
Kazi Daud Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tongibari Police Station said the situation is under control but none was arrested in this connection till filing this report.
