Freedom fighters in Nilphamari observed a four-hour-long token hunger strike on the premises of local Shaheed Minar on Saturday protesting alleged corruption in recent recruitment of third and fourth class employees under the district civil surgeon's office. The programme came as part of a series agitation following publication of the list of 70 recruited candidates on September 10 for appointment at six upazila health complexes in the district. The freedom fighters and locals have been demanding removal of the civil surgeon and necessary action against him. Seventy to eighty freedom fighters from different upazilas of the district assembled on the Shaheed Minar premises at 11:00pm and started the hunger strike under the leadership of Joynal Abedin, commander of district unit command of freedom fighters. Addressing the gathering, several freedom fighters alleged that over-aged candidates were illegally recruited violating government rules while non-freedom fighters' sons and daughters were recruited in reserved seats for freedom fighters' children in exchange of bribe. Later, local lawmaker Asaduzzaman Noor came to the venue, expressed solidarity with the freedom fighters and persuaded the freedom fighters to break their fast at about 3:00pm. On May 19 this year, health department in Nilphamari sought applications for recruitment of 83 third and fourth class employees under 12 categories to appoint them at the upazila health complexes in the district. After completing all formalities, Nilphamari civil surgeon (CS), also member secretary of the selection committee, published final list of 70 recruited candidates out of 83 in eleven categories on September 10. Publication of names of rest 13 recruited candidates for office assistant cum computer operator posts remained suspended as there was a court injunction. Anti-Corruption Commission started investigation into the allegation on October 26.
