'Pirate' held in Satkhira
Police arrested an alleged member of a notorious pirate gang in Shyamnagar upazila on Friday.
The arrestee was identified as Moniruzzaman Mukul of infamous Alim-Majnu Bahini of Sundarbans and son of Akkas Sardar of Phultola village in the upazila.
Acting on secret information, a team of police from Burigoalini camp conducted a drive in the area and arrested Mukul from Kolbari-Nouabeki road in the upazila at about 4pm.
Police said Moniruzzaman was involved in collecting ransom from the family of kidnapped fishermen since long.
Sources said, a gang of pirates kidnapped Shafiqul Islam, 22, son of late Shawkat Mali of Gabura village from Arangkola canal when he along with four others went to Sundarbans for catching fish on October 28.
The pirates also demanded two boats and Tk 12,000 as ransom over phone and Mukul was arrested when he went to the village to collect the ransom money.
