Robbers loot houses in Sylhet, Moulvibazar

Robbers looted house of an expatriate in Sylhet and another in Moulvibazar early Wednesday. An armed gang took away valuables worth about Tk 9 lakh from the house of an expatriate in Golapganj upazila headquarters in Sylhet. Local people said, at least 10-12 robbers entered into the house of the UK expatriate at around 2:00am by breaking open the main gate and stabbed his mother Haowa Begum and younger brother Nazrul Islam, reports UNB. Later, they looted Tk1 lakh in cash, 15 tolas of gold ornaments, 3 mobile phone sets and other valuables worth about Tk9 lakh from the house. Haowa Begum and her son Nazrul used to reside at the house, which was built five years ago. Critically injured Nazrul was rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital In Moulvibazar, five robbers were arrested at Chandagram village in Borolekha upazila early Wednesday, reports our correspondent. Police quoting local people said a gang numbering 8/10 stormed into the house of Shafiquddin late at night. They took the members of the house hostage at gun point and looted Tk80,000 in cash, gold ornaments and other valuables. Hearing the hue and cry, local people chased the robbers and caught two of them identified as Rahim Miah, 38, of Sylhet and Kamal Hossain, 30, of Moulvibazar. On information, police went to the spot and took the robbers to the police station. Later, on the basis of their confession, police arrested three other gang members identified as Lal Mia, 46, Shamsul Islam, 37, and Jewel Ahmad, 20, of the village. Police also recovered one 9mm pistol, one sawn-off rifle, one light gun (LG) and 10 bullets from their possession.
