School children in Joypurhat and Jhalakathi had an eventful day enjoying themselves by learning English through taking part in 'English Language Fairs' held at two schools in the districts yesterday. Under English in Schools (EIS) programme, The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi jointly organised the fairs in coordination with the education ministry to encourage development of English language proficiency among secondary school students. Adcomm Ltd is the creative and event partner of the fair. School students joined the fairs at RB Government High School in Joypurhat and Nalchity Girls' High School in Jhalakathi, report our correspondents from the districts. Each of the fair venues saw screening of Lion King, a globally renowned movie, followed by students' participation in spot quiz, vocabulary test, one word question and quick questions---all based on the movie. Selected students also took part in two-minute extempore speeches on different topics and role-play. Sushanto Kumar Dev, the headmaster of RB Government High School, formally inaugurated the fair at the school at around 11:00am. About 100 students of different classes joined the fair. Robi Area Manager ABM Safiul Kabir and assistant teachers--Aminul Islam, Md Habibur Rahman and Md Aminur Rahman--of RB Government High School were the judges. Headmaster Sushanto Kumar Dev distributed prizes among the winners of the activities at the end of the programme. The students, who enjoyed the lively environment of the fair, thanked The Daily Star and Robi for choosing schools across the country to hold such fair. Shariful Islam, a class seven student of the school, said, “It was a pleasure for me learning through the fair.” Habibur Rahman, an English teacher of the school, expressed his surprise at the skills of his pupils, saying their performance was very impressive. He thanked The Daily Star and Robi for distributing newspapers to the schools which help students develop their skills in English. The fair at Nalchity Girls'High School was presided over by Abdul Jalil, headmaster of the school. Sajib Ahamed, a Robi representitive from Dhaka, attended the fair and distributed prizes among the winners of the activities at the end of the programme. They students of the school entertained the audience by reciting poems, telling jokes and singing songs. The three-year EIS programme, initiated two years ago to promote the learning of English in secondary schools, covers seven lakh students in a thousand schools, including 317 government and 683 non-government ones, across the country. Three complimentary copies of The Daily Star, with a special page of English lessons prepared by the Centre for Languages of Brac University and coordinated by the education ministry, are given to each of the thousand schools five days a week under the EIS initiative.
