12 injured as supporters of AL, BNP leaders clash
At least 12 people were injured as the supporters of two local leaders of ruling AL and opposition BNP clashed on Monday night in Kalai upazila of Joypurhat district.
Police said the clash erupted after a supporter of the BNP leader beat up local AL leader Abdul Kuddus Fakir in the afternoon.
Quoting witnesses they said, after the incident, Abdul Kuddus Fakir, upazila general secretary of AL along with his supporters, equipped with wooden sticks, attacked the supporters of Ibrahim Fakir, UP chairman and a BNP leader of the upazila.
As the supporters of BNP also launched a counter attack, Punatbazar turned into a battlefield, leaving at least 12 people wounded.
Later police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Locals took the injured to Kalai upazila health complex. Of the injured, five were shifted to Joypurhat Modern Hospital at night.
The critically wounded are Shohel Rana, 30, Abdul Gafur, 50, Taslim Uddin, 30, Enamul Haque, 28, Tazul Islam, 25, and Abdul Rashid, 27.
Meanwhile, Mozahar Ali Prodhan, local lawmaker and president of Joypurhat district BNP visited the injured and claimed that his innocent party men were attacked by the ruling AL cadres.
Two separate cases were filed with Kalai police station.
